Automation Features

Pattern Library

Automation comes loaded with an extensive library of block and continuous line (pantograph) designs.  Thousands of patterns are available online for purchase.

Pantgraph Quilting

Pantographs are easy to design and quilt, look good on many styles of quilts, and are the bread and butter of longarm businesses.

Populate Pattern in Design Space

Depending on the pantograph mode, patterns will populate automatically into the design space and retain the aspect ratio of the pattern, even when the size of the pattern is adjusted larger or smaller.

Nesting Pattern Repeats

Pantograph patterns that undulate nest together in rows.  The pantograph feature automatically nests the patterns.  Additional, simple adjustments to the gap between the rows refine the look you want to see.

Block Quilting

Block quilting is easy.  By referencing the block corners, the block pattern is easily placed in the space. Further editing is possible.

Pattern Resizing

All patterns, both blocks and pantographs can be resized to fit the space, or sized to be in scale with the quilt top.  Resizing up or down does have some limits and will affect the density of the stitched pattern.

Pattern Rotation

Block patterns can be rotated within a space for best fit or for to achieve a design outcome.

Border Quilting

Borders can be quilted horizontally placing a designed pattern the length of the top and bottom border, then the is quilt turned 90 degrees to quilt the side borders.  Some border patterns can be quilted vertically without turning the quilt using a method called chunking.

Zoom True Size

Automation is equipped with a zoom feature to both zoom in for a better view, to help with more accurate pattern editing and placement, or to zoom to 100% to view the pattern at the true size it will stitch.

On-screen Preview

Pattern placement and quilt top design are all seen on the working screen.  Because what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) when you quilt the pattern, the on-screen preview helps you decide when the pattern is ready to quilt, or whether more editing is needed.

On-screen Real-time Stitching

As the pattern is being stitched by the machine, the screen displays the stitching in real time.  You know where the needle is, what has been stitched, and what hasn't been stitched at any moment.

On-screen Instructions

You don't have to remember everything.  Automation pages have help boxes, prompts with instructions, and popups with what to do next.

Point-to-Point

This technique places a repeatable pattern making pattern placement quick, as well as accurate.  Because several patterns are placed in a sequence, this is a time saving technique often used in custom quilting.

No-Sew Zone

When stitching a block or pantograph pattern, it is possible to prevent stitching over applique or embroidery with the no-sew or eClipse feature.

Automation does not load the quilt, advance the quilt, choose, edit, or place the pattern.

Automation offers you a platform to let your creativity soar.

Common Questions

Is automation difficult?

Not at all. Today's automation systems are designed to be intuitive and easy to learn.  Training resources, videos, classes, and support help you build confidence quickly. Most quilters are surprised by how quickly they go from stitching their first pantograph to creating beautiful custom quilts.

Will I lose my hand-guided skills?

Not at all. Automation is another quilting tool—not a replacement for your hand-guided skills. Most quilters continue to use both, choosing hand-guided quilting for free-motion creativity and automation when they want precision, consistency, or to bring more intricate designs to life.

Can I still free-motion?

Yes, you can even switch back and forth from free-motion to automation on the same quilt easily with a couple of quick adjustments.

Will automation make me faster?

Yes—but not just because the machine quilts for you. Automation may reduce some setup or design time, simplifies complex quilting, and lets you stitch with confidence and consistency. As your skills grow, you'll complete more quilts, be able to enjoy more quilting options, and spend more time creating instead of repositioning or marking designs.

Do I have to learn computers?

No. If you can use a smartphone, tablet, or basic computer, you can learn longarm automation. Today's systems are designed to be user-friendly, and with training and a little practice, most quilters become comfortable using automation much more quickly than they expected.

Can beginners use automation?

Absolutely. Many quilters choose automation with their very first longarm because it helps them achieve beautiful results while they build their quilting skills. Automation grows with you, making it just as valuable for beginners as it is for experienced and professional quilters.

Can I add automation later?

Automation can be added to your Nolting longarm at any time, at the beginning your longarm journey or at any time in the future.
