When: Wednesday, November 13 2:15-3:00

Presenter: Millie Kehrli, Ph.D.

Location: 1105 Hawkeye Drive, Hiawatha, IA 52233

Harriet Powers, born into slavery in 1837, created two extraordinary story quilts that captured her traditions, beliefs, and skill in ways that continue to inspire quilters today. By the time she was 58, slavery had been abolished, and Harriet was not only a mother of nine children but also an artist who used her creativity to tell powerful stories—and generate income through her craft.

One of Harriet’s most famous creations, the Bible Quilt, was eventually acquired by the Smithsonian. However, in 1992, the museum sparked controversy by outsourcing reproductions of Harriet’s quilts to Chinese workers, igniting protests from passionate quilters.

Join us for this fascinating class, where we’ll delve into Harriet Powers’ life and the rich storytelling woven into her Bible Quilt. You’ll also have an exclusive opportunity to examine one of the surviving Smithsonian-licensed reproduction quilts that stirred such passionate protests.

Whether you’re new to quilting or looking to enhance your craft, this class will show you how quilts can be powerful mediums for storytelling—and spark your own creative journey.

Whether you're just starting or already have quilting experience, imagine how your quilting could evolve with the precision and power of a Nolting longarm. This class offers not only history but also inspiration for your next step in quilting!
